The Far de Capdepera sits atop a 55-metre-high cliff at the easternmost tip of Mallorca, above Cala Ratjada. It was built by engineer Emili Pou y Bonet and put into operation in 1861 – today one of only five active lighthouses on the island.
Important to know: the tower itself cannot be visited from the inside, and there's no museum here either. The real star is the view. On a clear day, you can spot the neighbouring island of Menorca on the horizon (about 30–35 km away). Photographers come early in the morning for sunrise – the island's easternmost point is perfect for it. Nearby, you'll also find the ruins of the medieval Torre Esbucada watchtower.
By car, follow the “Far” signs from Cala Ratjada; the road narrows towards the end, and roadside parking is limited. If you're up for a walk, the switchback path takes about 40 minutes on foot – best done during the cooler hours.

From the end of the beach promenade in Cala Millor, it's a good 20–30 minute walk. The path is easy, though partly sandy and stony. At the top, there's a small bar with snacks and cold drinks – plus a panoramic view over the entire east coast. Perfect for a relaxed morning without a car.

This small lighthouse marks the harbour entrance of Porto Cristo and sits spectacularly right on the steep coastline. It's popular with photographers and hikers, as you get sweeping sea views at sunrise and sunset, along with a great vantage point to watch boats coming and going.
Note: there's no paved path to the tower – you'll need to climb over rocky terrain. Sturdy shoes with thick soles are a must, and it's not really suitable for young children. If you're already exploring the area explored or visited the caves of Porto Cristo, this detour is easy to fit in.

If you're planning a full day trip, the Faro de Formentor at the north-western tip of Mallorca is an absolute highlight. Important for planning: it is not near Cala Millor, but at the opposite end of the island – expect around 1.5 to 2 hours' drive each way.
The drive there is an experience in itself: a winding road snakes across the rugged Formentor peninsula, with its steep cliffs and deep blue sea. Keep in mind that access to the peninsula during high season is sometimes only possible by shuttle bus – check the current regulations beforehand. Around the lighthouse it can get very crowded at midday, and the cafés there are noticeably more expensive than elsewhere on the island.

The viewpoints get crowded and hot around midday. At Far de Capdepera, sunrise is well worth it, while at the west coast lighthouses sunset is the better choice. Because of its eastern location, you won't see a true sunset over the sea at Far de Capdepera, but the morning light there is beautiful.
Sturdy footwear
Especially near Porto Cristo and Portocolom, there's no comfortable path leading directly to the tower – sandals are not a good idea here.
Combine it with a swim
